Global Warming, Climate Chaos, and a Heating World: Unprecedented Climate Change
If you are between 40 and 50 years old, did you know that you have lived through one of the most significant periods in world history?
Clear Signs of Climate Change
During this time, humanity has witnessed unprecedented global climate changes. The Earth’s temperature has reached its highest levels since human existence began, polar ice caps and mountain glaciers are melting rapidly, sea levels are rising globally, and extreme weather events have become the new normal. Every report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since the first in 1990 to the latest in 2023 confirms these dramatic climate changes. The severity of these changes increases every year, making “global warming” an insufficient term. Now, “global boiling” better reflects our current reality.
Causes of Climate Change
Climate change is driven by human-induced greenhouse gas emissions. Scientific measurements from the 1950s on Hawaii’s high mountains and global monitoring networks confirm that greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere have continuously increased, reaching record highs in human history. The current global emissions total approximately 49 billion tons per year, with Thailand contributing about 372 million tons annually.
Disasters from Climate Change
If we do not halt greenhouse gas emissions, climate-induced disasters will undoubtedly occur. Clear signs are already visible. The extreme and prolonged heat in Thailand in early 2024 is unprecedented. The unpredictable weather patterns are causing systems to struggle to adapt. For example, the rainy season brings excessive water, while the dry season offers barely any. If we continue on this path without taking action, the future of humanity could face extinction. What seemed like a scary story for children 10-20 years ago is now a real-life threat.
